Your Rhodes Cruise Port Guide

Arriving on a cruise ship in Rhodes? Our guide details how to walk to the Old Town, what to see in 4-8 hours, and how to plan your limited time in port.

Arriving by cruise ship in Rhodes offers a rare treat: your ship docks at the Commercial Harbour, right beside the medieval walls of the Old Town. This incredible proximity means you can explore the UNESCO-listed city on foot without needing a transfer, provided you plan your time carefully.

This guide helps you decide what's realistic for your port call, whether you have four hours or a full eight, helping you choose the right sights and experiences for your schedule.

From Ship to Medieval City

After leaving the small terminal, you can walk to the Old Town in about 10–15 minutes. Head towards the towering medieval walls and follow the road to an entrance gate. St. John Gate is often the most direct, while Marine Gate brings you into the harbour side of the city.

It’s vital to know that the cruise port is separate from Mandraki Harbour, so if you have a pre-booked tour or pickup, always follow its specific meeting instructions rather than just walking towards the walls.

How to Spend Your Time in Port

Your time in port is your most valuable asset. Keep the Old Town as your priority, then add other sights if your schedule allows. Always work backwards from your all-aboard time, leaving a generous buffer for re-boarding.

On a tight four-hour stop, focus on a walk through the Old Town, seeing the Street of the Knights and the exterior of the Palace of the Grand Master. With six hours, you can explore the Old Town more deeply or add a walk to nearby Mandraki Harbour with its windmills and deer statues. An eight-hour stop allows for a more relaxed pace, perhaps including a visit inside the Palace or the Archaeological Museum.

Beyond the Walls: Beaches and Lindos

Mandraki Harbour is a straightforward addition to an Old Town visit, but Elli Beach requires more commitment, with a walk of around 40 minutes from the cruise port. Treat a beach trip as an optional extra, not a must-do.

Visiting Lindos requires transport and is generally unrealistic on a short four-hour stop. For longer calls, it must be your main excursion, not an add-on. Whether you book a ship's excursion or a private driver, confirm the full duration and return time to ensure you don't miss your ship's departure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I walk to the Old Town from my cruise ship?

Yes, most ships dock at the Commercial Harbour, which is a 10–15 minute walk from the Old Town gates. The approach is mostly flat, but the streets inside are cobbled.

Is the cruise port the same as Mandraki Harbour?

No, they are two separate places. The cruise terminal is at the Commercial Harbour. Mandraki Harbour, with its famous deer statues and windmills, is about a 25-minute walk from the cruise port.

What should I prioritise on a very short visit (around 4 hours)?

Focus on the heart of the medieval city. A walk up the Street of the Knights to the Palace of the Grand Master (even just seeing the exterior) gives you a fantastic sense of the Old Town's history and scale.
