Chapter 1 of 6
The shoreline, the swimming and that diving platform
Elli stretches along the northern end of Rhodes Town, with the historic Rhodes Aquarium and offshore diving platform as its best-known landmarks. It’s an organised city beach: rows of umbrellas, people coming and going from the promenade, and swimmers sharing the view with beach-bar customers.
The shore is a mixture of sand and fine pebbles, not a soft-sand beach from end to end. The water is usually very clear and generally warm from late spring into autumn. For a wider look at the island's beaches, see my complete Rhodes Beach Guide.
Where to put your towel
Central Elli has softer sand mixed with small pebbles and is a good starting point for a straightforward swim. Towards the Aquarium, the shore becomes more pebbly and the atmosphere is often quieter than around the platform. The casino end can also feel stonier, particularly at the waterline.
Light water shoes are useful for sensitive feet, though plenty of people manage barefoot. For swimmers who enjoy doing laps, the long shoreline offers room to swim parallel to the beach without making the platform the destination.
The livelier water around the platform
The diving platform gives Elli much of its personality. People swim out, jump in and take photos, so the surrounding water has a playful, energetic feel. Personally, I’d swim away from it for uninterrupted laps and enjoy the activity from the shore afterwards.
The deeper water around the platform is for confident swimmers who can comfortably manage the return swim.

Getting to Elli without making a trip of it
Walking is the simplest approach from central Rhodes Town. Mandraki Harbour, the New Town and the Old Town can all fit into the same outing, although your hotel or Old Town exit gate determines the actual walk.
Use Elli Beach as your destination, rather than a general search for “Rhodes Town beach”. Nearby Akti Miaouli is a separate beach, not another section of Elli. For a meeting point, name a beachfront venue or landmark; “somewhere by the Aquarium” leaves quite a bit of room for confusion.
Coming from elsewhere on Rhodes
For a beach-and-town day, the bus is a sensible first option. The Rhodes bus guide explains the journey into Rhodes Town; plan for the onward walk and the seasonal return timetable.
A taxi or prearranged transfer is useful when the walk is awkward or you’re carrying luggage. Agree on a specific drop-off and return pickup point.
I wouldn’t hire a car just for Elli. Compare Rhodes car rental options when the beach is one stop on a wider island itinerary, not because you need a vehicle for a central town stay.

Sunbeds: ordinary beach day or premium front row?
Elli has sunbeds, umbrellas and canteens, along with showers and changing cabins. Toilets are accessed through cafés and beach bars, so their use follows the venue’s arrangements. There are also lifeguard stations during the summer season.
The biggest surprise for first-time visitors is often the difference between an ordinary sunbed set and a premium beachfront bed. Both give you access to the same sea, but the bill can look very different.
- Basic sunbed sets away from the busiest bars: around €15 per set.
- Better-quality organised sections: roughly €20–€30 per set.
- Premium front-row beds: sometimes €80–€100 per bed in peak season.
Get the full price before settling in
Ask whether the quote is per bed or per set, whether an umbrella is included, and whether any minimum spend is additional to the rental.
For a brief dip, decide whether you’ll use a bed long enough to justify renting one. For several hours on the beach, shade earns its place in the budget much more quickly.

Beach clubs, coffee and lunch in town
Elli’s beach-club scene is part of the attraction, not the whole beach experience. You can have a simple swim and coffee, settle into a serviced bed, or stay for drinks as the seafront gets livelier.
During summer, Ronda and neighbouring beach clubs host sunset events, DJ sessions and themed parties. Some stretches have music during the afternoon, so take a short walk along the promenade before committing to a bed if you’d prefer conversation or a book.
What you’re paying for on the beachfront
Sea views and beach service come at a premium here. Look at the menu before settling in, particularly for a family lunch or several rounds of drinks.
Canteens are handy for a quick refreshment, while beach bars serve snacks, salads and cocktails. Nearby streets add cafés, bakeries, gelato spots and tavernas, so there’s no need to make every meal a beachfront purchase.
For a proper meal after swimming, the Rhodes Town restaurant guide gives you options beyond the nearest sunbed menu.
Chapter 5 of 6
A morning swim, then back into Rhodes Town
Morning is my favourite time for Elli: locals arrive for their swim, the promenade is less busy and there’s still a whole day ahead. Around midday, the sunbed rows fill and the cafés pick up pace.
Late afternoon brings softer light and a relaxed beach-bar mood, though an evening event can keep individual venues lively. July and August are the busiest months; May–June and September–October usually feel less crowded. See the guide to when to visit Rhodes for the wider seasonal picture.
Keep the rest of the day simple
The historic Rhodes Aquarium is the natural extra stop when you’re staying around the beach. For a longer outing, have your swim, change, then walk towards Mandraki Harbour and continue into the Old Town.
There’s no need to squeeze sightseeing between swims. Elli works particularly well when the beach is one relaxed part of the day, followed by a promenade walk and dinner.
With children, leave room for a short visit
Food, shade and town close by make short family visits easy, especially if you’re staying within walking distance, but the pebbly entry makes Elli less appealing for toddlers’ shallow-water play.
A small bag is enough
Bring swimwear, a towel, drinking water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Add water shoes for pebble-sensitive feet and a light cover-up for a longer stay.
Carry only what you need for the outing, and don’t leave phones, cards or other valuables unattended while you swim.

Mobility access: the promenade and the sea are separate questions
Elli’s promenade and paved approaches are useful for reaching the seafront, but getting across the beach and into the water requires separate planning. Sand and pebbles remain part of that route.
Elli is included in an initiative to supply and install autonomous sea-access systems for people with mobility difficulties, alongside Faliraki and Afandou. Before arranging a visit around that equipment, confirm its current operation, the exact entrance, any transfer assistance you need, and suitable toilet and changing access.
Our guide to accessible beaches in Rhodes can help you compare options. A recent photo of the intended entrance and route to the water is often more useful than a broad description of the beach as “accessible”.
Getting to Elli Beach: when booking transport helps
transfersFrequently asked questions
How far is Elli Beach from Rhodes Old Town?
There isn’t one useful walking time for the whole Old Town: the gate you leave through and your destination along Elli both matter. Plot the walk from your exit gate rather than starting from a pin in the middle of the Medieval City.
Do you need to book sunbeds at Elli Beach?
Advance booking is worth considering for premium front-row beds in July and August. It makes less sense to commit to an expensive setup when you’re only planning a short swim.
Is Elli Beach good for snorkelling?
Elli is more compelling for a convenient swim than a dedicated snorkelling outing. Anthony Quinn Bay is the stronger choice when snorkelling is the main reason for your beach trip.
Is Elli the best beach in Rhodes for toddlers?
Its town location makes family logistics easy, but it wouldn’t be my first choice for a trip centred on shallow-water play. Agathi Beach has shallower water and is a better comparison for that kind of day.
Which beach should I choose instead of Elli for softer sand?
Tsambika Beach is the stronger choice for a sand-focused beach day. Elli’s advantage is having Rhodes Town on your doorstep, not the island’s softest shoreline.
