How to Stay Connected in Greece as a Non-EU/UK Traveler

The simplest way to stay connected in Greece is to compare your home provider’s roaming package with a Greek prepaid SIM or a Greece-compatible travel eSIM before you fly. For visitors from the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK, being in an EU country doesn’t automatically mean your home plan includes affordable roaming.

My advice is to sort out your mobile data before you’re standing outside arrivals trying to find your transfer driver. You’ll want maps, your accommodation address and WhatsApp ready—not a surprise daily charge or a phone that’s still searching for a network.

If your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, EIOTCLUB’s Europe Prepaid Travel eSIM is an option I recommend considering for holiday data. I use EIOTCLUB alongside a local Greek SIM, and I’ll explain what I like about it—as well as when your existing roaming package or a local plan with a Greek number might be the better fit.

Chapter 1 of 11

Why non-EU and UK travelers need to check roaming

Roaming depends on your mobile subscription, not your passport. An American with an eligible EU mobile plan and a European using a US plan can face different rules from what their nationality suggests.

The EU’s ‘Roam Like at Home’ rules generally let customers with eligible EU/EEA subscriptions use their domestic calls, texts and data while traveling in Greece, subject to their plan and fair-use limits. They don’t turn a US, Canadian or Australian subscription into a European one. Those providers set their own Greece roaming packages and charges.

UK travelers need the same practical check. Since Brexit, EU roaming rules no longer require UK providers to offer surcharge-free EU roaming. Some UK plans include Greece, and others charge for it. Check the exact tariff you’re on, rather than assuming all customers of the same provider get the same allowance.

Ask what triggers a daily roaming pass, how much high-speed data it includes, and whether calls, incoming calls, SMS and voicemail cost extra. Background activity can matter even when you haven’t deliberately opened an app. Compare the total for your whole trip, including any stopover—not just the advertised daily price.

Your four main options for internet in Greece

There isn’t one best SIM card for Greece travel that suits everyone. The right choice depends on your phone, your existing plan and whether you need ordinary phone calls or mostly maps and messaging.

OptionWhen it makes senseMain trade-off
Home-provider roamingGreece is included, or the total trip cost is reasonableExtra charges, daily triggers and roaming data limits depend on your tariff
Local Greek prepaid SIMYou want a local service and possibly a Greek numberShop setup, plan selection and an unlocked compatible phone
Travel eSIMYou want to arrange mobile data before arrivalRequires eSIM support; calls and SMS depend on the product
International physical SIM or data planYour phone lacks eSIM support, or you need a compatible router solutionShipping, hardware compatibility and Greece coverage must be checked

Roaming with your existing provider

This is the least disruptive option: your usual SIM stays in place, and your phone number works as your plan permits. If Greece is already included, paying for another data plan may be unnecessary. If it isn’t, compare a prepaid travel option with the full roaming cost before deciding.

Buying a local Greek SIM card

A Greece prepaid SIM card can be useful for a longer stay or if you want a Greek number. Compare current prepaid offers directly with Greek operators such as COSMOTE, Vodafone Greece and Nova. Ask what the chosen bundle includes, how registration works, what identification is required and how you’ll add credit.

I wouldn’t build an arrival plan around an assumed airport shop, opening time or tourist-SIM price. Arrange a backup way to reach your hotel and check the operator’s current sales locations. A local package’s voice allowance, expiry and eligibility for use elsewhere in Europe are plan-specific.

I have a local Greek SIM myself, and it remains useful. A local plan can be a good choice if you need a Greek telephone number, ordinary cellular calls or SMS. Buying one isn’t automatically the best solution for every visitor, though: consider the setup, the services you need and how you prefer to manage your holiday data.

Reception in Greece can vary by location, network, device and conditions. Buildings, terrain and busy locations can affect either a physical SIM or a travel eSIM. Neither format guarantees uninterrupted internet at every hotel, tucked-away beach or point along an island road.

For a simpler arrival, arranging a compatible travel eSIM before departure can avoid a SIM-shopping errand. That is a preparation benefit—not evidence that EIOTCLUB always has better reception than a Greek mobile network. Keep offline copies of your bookings whichever service you choose.

Using a travel eSIM

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile installed on a compatible phone. You don’t need to swap a little plastic card, and a dual-SIM phone may let you keep your usual line alongside the travel data line. Many travel products focus on data, so a good price doesn’t necessarily include a Greek phone number, calls or SMS.

Using an international physical SIM or data plan

A physical travel SIM can suit an unlocked phone without eSIM support. Check Greece on that exact product’s coverage list and confirm smartphone compatibility. A card sold for a security camera, tracker or router isn’t automatically the right holiday phone product. Allow time for delivery and keep your home SIM somewhere safe.

Chapter 3 of 11

eSIM or physical SIM: which would I choose?

For a short holiday with an unlocked eSIM-compatible phone, I’d usually compare a travel eSIM first. It avoids a shopping errand after landing and can be prepared using Wi-Fi at home. It’s particularly useful if your US-market phone has no physical SIM tray.

For a phone without eSIM support, a compatible physical SIM is the straightforward alternative. If the phone is locked to your home provider, neither another company’s physical SIM nor its eSIM is a workaround for that lock. Ask your provider about unlocking before purchasing.

A local Greek plan may be preferable if calling restaurants, accommodation or a car-rental office through ordinary cellular calls is important. For app-based communication, a data plan may be enough. The deciding question is what you need your phone to do, not which format sounds newer.

Chapter 4 of 11

Why I recommend considering EIOTCLUB for a Greece holiday

EIOTCLUB’s Europe Prepaid Travel eSIM explicitly lists Greece among 33 covered European countries. It is worth comparing for a Greece-only holiday or a trip combining destinations on that specific list. This recommendation is about the Europe travel eSIM—not every SIM, hotspot or device EIOTCLUB sells.

I use a local Greek SIM as well, but I also like using EIOTCLUB. My experience with EIOTCLUB has been very good, and one thing I particularly appreciate is its own app. I can keep an eye on my data usage and increase my data allowance when I need more. It makes managing my travel data much easier when I’m exploring Greece, and I like having it as an alternative to relying only on my local SIM.

That is my personal experience and preference, not a network comparison or a promise of faster speeds. For maps, WhatsApp, browsing and travel bookings, the convenience of arranging data ahead of time and managing it during the trip is the reason I recommend considering EIOTCLUB.

Keep an included roaming package if it already meets your needs. If a Greek number, ordinary cellular calls or SMS are important, a suitable local voice-inclusive package may be more practical. Internet calls and messages through WhatsApp are different from dialing a restaurant’s ordinary telephone number.

Why the EIOTCLUB app is useful while traveling

EIOTCLUB’s app information describes data-usage monitoring, package expiry, SIM status and billing information. Its eSIM instructions also explain linking your eSIM’s ICCID—the identifier for that profile—to the app or recharge account so you can check usage and manage the plan. That gives you a clearer picture of what you have used instead of guessing how much data is left.

For a traveler, that is practical: check your usage before a day of maps, messages and booking checks, then decide whether to reduce background downloads or arrange more data. The app helps with planning; it does not mean you can ignore your allowance or assume it will last the whole holiday.

EIOTCLUB’s eSIM FAQ says you can top up or extend an eligible data plan through the app or its recharge website. Link the correct eSIM to your account, view the options offered for that profile, and read the allowance, price, validity and start rules before purchasing additional data. The website also offers an ICCID lookup for available plans. Additional data is a separate purchase—not free—and the options and timing depend on your selected plan. Do not assume every bundle can be increased in the same way or that a top-up will connect instantly.

Chapter 5 of 11

Choosing an EIOTCLUB plan without buying more than you need

Start with your trip dates and how you’ll actually use your phone. A week using maps, WhatsApp and restaurant searches is different from working on a laptop through a hotspot. Compare the Europe travel eSIM’s fixed-data options before automatically selecting unlimited.

The Europe Prepaid Travel eSIM listed these allowances and validity periods when reviewed on 13 October 2026. Use the comparison to choose the type of plan, then check the current product page and checkout for the price, currency and applicable taxes. I have left fixed prices out so this guide does not present an old offer as today’s price.

Europe eSIM optionListed validityWhat to compare
1GB30 daysSmall total allowance; monitor usage
5GB30 daysCompare with your usual away-from-Wi-Fi use
15GB30 daysLarger total allowance for heavier use
25GB30 daysConsider hotspot and background downloads
Unlimited7, 10, 15 or 30 days3GB high-speed per day, then 384 Kbps after the daily limit

A 30-day validity period is a window to use the allowance, not 30 days of unrestricted data. A small allowance can be exhausted well before expiry. Equally, a seven-day unlimited plan may be awkward for a longer trip even if you don’t use much data.

For Americans, the Europe product can cover your Greek holiday even though you’re buying from the USA. Your departure country doesn’t determine the destination plan. EIOTCLUB also lists a USA & Europe Prepaid Travel eSIM with Greece included; compare it only if you actually want the wider coverage. Canadians and Australians should likewise choose by itinerary, not by nationality.

The Europe product is described as reusable and rechargeable. If you expect to need more data, look at the top-up choices offered for your own eSIM in the app or recharge account before relying on them. Check their cost, validity, start rules and any renewal setting; a refill is not automatically the same bundle you bought originally.

Chapter 6 of 11

Seven things to check before purchasing

Spend a few minutes on these checks now, rather than trying to solve them with airport Wi-Fi later.

  • Device: confirm eSIM support for your exact model and country variant, and check it is network-unlocked. A model name alone isn’t always enough.
  • Coverage: Greece must appear on the chosen product’s current country list. Check every stopover or extra country separately; Greece coverage isn’t worldwide coverage.
  • Allowance: look at total data, daily high-speed limits and what happens after either limit. Hotspot use shares the same allowance.
  • Validity: read when the countdown starts. EIOTCLUB’s page describes both activation on a supported network and activation on installation; use the policy in your specific order rather than guessing.
  • Calls and SMS: establish whether the exact plan includes a number and ordinary cellular services. A travel data line doesn’t automatically replace your home phone service.
  • Sharing and work: the Europe product says data sharing is allowed, but consider its speed limits before relying on laptop work or several family devices.
  • Support and payment: retain the order email, installation instructions and support details. Check final charges, refund terms, refill availability and renewal settings before purchase.

Reliable Connectivity in Greece

EIOTCLUB’s SIM/eSIM service supports both Vodafone and Nova (formerly Wind) in Greece, giving travellers access to these local mobile networks. You can check the supported networks directly in the EIOTCLUB app under the Coverage and Network sections of your data plan.

Chapter 7 of 11

Prepare your phone before departure, then connect after landing

Do the administrative part at home on a stable internet connection. Confirm compatibility and unlocking, purchase the intended plan, and save the order email and support information. EIOTCLUB’s setup instructions describe installing the profile using a QR code delivered by email. Have that code available on another screen if your phone’s installation process needs one.

Illustration: check your phone, save the order email and read the activation instructions before departure.
Illustration: check your phone, save the order email and read the activation instructions before departure.

Read the activation policy before installing. Some profiles start their validity when they first connect to a supported network; others start immediately on installation. Don’t install a short-validity profile weeks early on the assumption that nothing will happen.

On arrival, select the travel line for mobile data and follow the order’s setup instructions, including APN or data-roaming settings if required. A travel eSIM may need data roaming enabled on that line. That doesn’t mean you should enable expensive roaming on your home SIM. Keep the two lines clearly labeled and disable automatic cellular-data switching where your phone offers it.

Before leaving arrivals, load your hotel address and send a message. Link your eSIM to the EIOTCLUB app or recharge account and check the usage information available for your profile. If it does not connect, use available Wi-Fi to revisit the instructions and contact support; do not delete the profile unless the provider tells you to. Reinstallation depends on the provider’s rules.

For a Rhodes arrival, save the transfer meeting point and read the Rhodes Airport arrival guide in advance. If you’re taking public transport, keep the relevant Rhodes bus timetable handy before you leave the terminal.

Chapter 8 of 11

Staying connected on Greek islands and around Rhodes

Mobile data is most useful in the gaps between hotel Wi-Fi: finding your car-rental pickup point, checking a ferry booking, messaging your host or finding somewhere to eat after a beach day. Keep booking confirmations and key addresses available offline as well as in your inbox.

On Rhodes, download a Google Maps area before exploring beyond your base. Offline maps help with navigation, but live traffic, updated opening information and some route features still need a connection. Plan your days with the Rhodes Island Guide, and use its car-rental advice if you’re exploring independently.

Near an international border or coastline, look at the network welcome message rather than assuming the phone is still using a Greek network. Our existing Rhodes internet and SIM-card guide explains the island-specific risk of connecting to a Turkish network. Turkey isn’t on the Europe travel eSIM country list reviewed here. Follow the provider’s instructions if manual network selection is needed.

Ferries need particular care. A land-based mobile connection may disappear offshore, and some ships have satellite-linked mobile networks. The European Commission warns that those non-terrestrial services aren’t covered by Roam Like at Home and can carry high surcharges. A Greece travel data bundle isn’t a promise of onboard satellite access either.

For a crossing, I’d save the ticket first, then use airplane mode and turn Wi-Fi back on if I want to use an onboard Wi-Fi service under its stated terms. You can enjoy the journey without letting the phone hunt for an expensive network.

Chapter 9 of 11

How much mobile data do you need for a week?

There’s no honest one-size-fits-all number. Maps, short messages, email and booking checks generally use much less data than streaming video, uploading lots of photos, cloud backups or tethering a laptop. Video quality, app settings and background activity can change the total substantially.

Look at your phone’s recent app-by-app usage before buying. If you normally use only a few gigabytes away from Wi-Fi, a fixed allowance may suit a holiday with similar habits. If you’ll replace home Wi-Fi with a hotspot, plan for a very different pattern. Those are planning examples, not guarantees that a given allowance will last a week.

Download maps, playlists and entertainment over Wi-Fi before leaving. Restrict large app updates and photo backups to Wi-Fi, and monitor your plan during the trip. With EIOTCLUB, the app’s usage and expiry information helps you judge whether an eligible paid top-up is worth arranging before you run low. Families should remember that one hotspot can feed several devices while spending one person’s allowance.

Chapter 10 of 11

Common mistakes that make connectivity more expensive

Most avoidable problems come from buying the wrong product or leaving the wrong line in charge of data—not from needing complicated phone knowledge.

  • Buying on brand name alone: check the exact Greece-compatible product, not a US-only SIM or an IoT device plan.
  • Assuming unlocked means eSIM-ready: these are separate requirements, and both matter for a travel eSIM.
  • Keeping home-SIM data switching on: the phone may use a costly line when the travel line loses signal.
  • Treating unlimited as unlimited high speed: compare the daily threshold and reduced speed before streaming or working.
  • Leaving ordinary calls unplanned: WhatsApp works differently from dialing a restaurant’s phone number over the cellular network.
  • Depending entirely on reception: keep tickets, emergency contacts, accommodation details and maps accessible offline.

My preference is a simple setup: one clearly labeled data line, a saved copy of the instructions and a backup for the first journey. Once that’s sorted, get back to planning the holiday.

Chapter 11 of 11

Choose the connection that fits your holiday

For holiday data arranged before arrival, EIOTCLUB’s Europe Prepaid Travel eSIM is an option I recommend considering if your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible. My own experience with EIOTCLUB has been very good, and the app’s data-management convenience is something I genuinely value. That preference is not a guarantee of coverage or speed.

Keep a good existing roaming package if it already covers what you need. Choose a suitable local plan if a Greek number and ordinary calls or SMS matter more. A helpful recommendation should fit the traveler, rather than insist that everyone buys the same thing.

Match the plan to your itinerary, read the activation and allowance terms, and keep your home line’s charges under control. That’s how to stay connected in Greece without turning the first day of your holiday into a phone-settings problem.

Frequently asked questions

How can I get internet in Greece as a tourist from the USA?

Compare your US provider’s Greece roaming package with a Greek prepaid SIM or a Greece-compatible travel eSIM. An unlocked eSIM-ready phone can use a travel data profile; a local SIM may suit you better if you need a Greek number. Keep your arrival details offline as a backup.

Is roaming expensive in Greece for non-EU visitors?

It depends on your home tariff. US, Canadian, Australian and UK plans don’t automatically receive EU/EEA roaming benefits. Some include Greece or offer a reasonable travel pass; others charge significantly more. Compare the full trip cost and data limits with prepaid alternatives.

Should I buy an eSIM or a physical SIM for Greece?

An eSIM is convenient for an unlocked compatible phone when you want to arrange data before arrival. A physical SIM suits phones without eSIM support. Choose based on device compatibility, allowance, validity and whether you need ordinary calls and SMS—not format alone.

Can I buy a SIM card before arriving in Greece?

Yes, you can purchase a suitable travel eSIM before departure, or order a physical travel SIM with enough time for delivery. Check Greece coverage and the start of validity. Buying early and activating early aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Will an international SIM work on Rhodes?

Only if that exact product includes Greece and works with your device. EIOTCLUB’s Europe Prepaid Travel eSIM lists Greece, but reception still depends on local conditions and the service’s network access. International branding isn’t a guarantee of Greece coverage.

How much mobile data do I need for a week in Greece?

Use your normal away-from-Wi-Fi usage as a starting point. Maps, messaging and booking checks are different from daily video streaming or laptop tethering. Allow a buffer and monitor your balance; no fixed allowance is guaranteed to last every traveler a week.

Can I use WhatsApp with a data-only SIM or eSIM?

Yes, WhatsApp can use an internet connection from mobile data or Wi-Fi. Keep the app registered to your existing number; you don’t need to switch its number just because you change data lines. If verification is requested, you’ll need access to the registered number. WhatsApp calls don’t create an ordinary cellular calling allowance.

Does an eSIM work on every smartphone?

No. Your exact model and regional variant must support eSIM, and a third-party travel profile requires an unlocked device. Confirm compatibility with your phone maker and provider before purchasing.

Can I keep my regular SIM active while using an eSIM?

On a compatible dual-SIM phone, usually yes. EIOTCLUB describes using the home line for voice/text and its Europe eSIM for data. Disable unwanted home-line data roaming and switching. Calls and texts on the home line remain subject to your provider’s overseas charges.

Does EIOTCLUB offer unlimited high-speed data in Greece?

Its Europe travel eSIM page lists unlimited-duration options with 3GB of high-speed data per day, then reduced speed of 384 Kbps after the limit. Check the selected option’s current terms; unlimited isn’t unlimited high-speed data.
