Do You Really Need a Car?
You don't have to choose between a car for the whole holiday and no car at all. A popular strategy is to use buses and walking for the first few days in a base like Rhodes Town, then hire a car for a couple of days to explore further afield. This saves you from paying for a vehicle you're not using and avoids the hassle of city parking.
A car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, especially in the less-connected south and west. It's the best way to reach remote beaches, visit mountain tavernas in villages like Embonas, or drive the scenic route to Monolithos Castle. For these kinds of trips, public transport is often impractical.
Using Buses and Taxis
Rhodes has two separate bus companies, which can be confusing. City buses (RODA) serve Rhodes Town and nearby resorts like Ixia and Faliraki. Intercity buses (KTEL) run longer routes to destinations like Lindos, Kolymbia, and Gennadi. Always check the operator for your journey and, most importantly, the time of the last bus back.
Buses are a cost-effective way to manage straightforward return trips between major resorts, but they can get crowded in summer, especially the popular Faliraki and Lindos services. For exploring multiple remote spots in one day, buses are not the answer.
Taxis are readily available at the airport and in main towns, but don't plan around Uber or Bolt. They are convenient for short, direct journeys or for covering the last leg to your hotel from a bus stop. However, relying on them for repeated sightseeing or long-distance trips can quickly become more expensive than a day's car hire. Always confirm if card payment is accepted before you get in.
Arriving at the Airport
You have four main options for getting from Rhodes Airport (RHO) to your accommodation, each with its own trade-offs.
A pre-booked private transfer offers a fixed price and a driver waiting for you on arrival. It's the most stress-free option, particularly for families, late-night arrivals, or those heading to southern resorts like Lindos or Kiotari.
The airport taxi rank is the default choice for many. Queues can form in peak season, and you should confirm the fare before setting off. Indicative fares are published, but supplements can apply.
The airport bus is the cheapest option, running to Rhodes Town via Ialyssos and Ixia. It doesn't provide a door-to-door service, so be prepared for a walk with your luggage at the other end. For journeys to the south, it requires a time-consuming change in Rhodes Town.
Hiring a car from the airport makes sense if you plan to explore from day one. However, if you're arriving late or staying in Rhodes Town first, you might prefer to take a transfer and pick up a car later.
Walking and Boat Trips
Remember that some of Rhodes' most famous sights are car-free. You cannot drive into the medieval heart of Rhodes Old Town or the village of Lindos. Any vehicle will drop you at the perimeter, leaving you to navigate the final approach on foot. If you have mobility concerns or heavy luggage, check the exact drop-off point with your accommodation.
For a different perspective on the island's coastline, consider a boat excursion. Day trips to Lindos or sightseeing cruises to beautiful bays like Anthony Quinn's can be a relaxing alternative to a day on the roads.

Frequently asked questions
Is there Uber or Bolt in Rhodes?
Don't plan around them. Uber announced a service on Rhodes in 2023, but app rides are not a dependable way to travel here. Use the island's official taxis from ranks at the airport, towns and major resorts, the bus or a rental car. See Is there Uber in Rhodes?.
Do I need a car for my whole holiday in Rhodes?
Not necessarily. Many visitors hire a car for just two or three days to explore remote beaches and villages, relying on cheaper buses, taxis, or walking while based in a resort or Rhodes Town.
How do I get to Lindos from the airport by bus?
It typically requires changing buses in Rhodes Town. You would take the airport bus to the main bus station, then find the KTEL service to Lindos. This significantly increases travel time compared to a direct taxi or pre-booked transfer.
Can you drive and park in Rhodes Old Town?
No, vehicle access inside the walls of the medieval Old Town is restricted. You must park outside and walk in. Taxis will drop you at one of the main gates.
