Gennadi Beach

Gennadi Beach is a long, open shoreline of sand and small pebbles on Rhodes' eastern coast. If you want space and like picking your own spot rather than squeezing into a small bay, it's a good choice.

If sand is important to you, I'd look at Glystra Beach instead. If you're happy with a mixed shoreline and want a relaxed day with room to spread out, Gennadi is hard to beat in this part of the island.

Chapter 1 of 8

Is Gennadi Beach right for your beach day?

If I were planning a relaxed beach day in this part of Rhodes, I'd choose Gennadi when I wanted space rather than a small bay. The beach stretches a long way, so finding your own patch is part of the appeal. For other coastlines, see the Rhodes Island Guide's beach section.

Who I'd recommend it to

Couples and solo travellers who want to read, swim and take a long shoreline walk will love it. It also works for families who don't mind a mix of sand and pebbles.

When I'd choose another beach

If pebbles would spoil your day, Glystra Beach is the sandier option nearby. And if you want everything—sunbeds, bar, watersports—right at your towel, a busier resort beach will suit you better.

Chapter 2 of 8

What is the shoreline like?

Gennadi is a mixed beach of sand and small pebbles, with small dunes and low vegetation behind it that give it an open, natural feel. It isn't all sand, so water shoes are handy if pebbles bother your feet.

Finding your spot

The beach is long, so if the first patch you see doesn't suit you, walk a little further. Neighbouring Kiotari Beach lies further north along the same coast.

Chapter 3 of 8

What are swimming and families like?

Gennadi can work well for families who are comfortable with a sand-and-pebble shoreline. Pick a spot where getting in and out of the water feels easy, and keep the usual close eye on children in the sea. On windy days the waves can pick up, so that's a better day for the shore than for swimming.

With children

Water shoes make the pebbly entry more comfortable for little feet. If the sea isn't right for swimming, the village and other family activities in Rhodes make an easy change of plan.

Chapter 4 of 8

What facilities are there?

Gennadi has both organised and quieter sections, so you can choose the type of beach day that suits you. Facilities differ depending on where you settle: some stretches have sunbeds and umbrellas, while others are left natural.

Organised or natural?

If sunbeds and shade matter, head for an organised section. If you're happy being self-sufficient, the quieter stretches give you more space—just bring your own water and shade. The Rhodes Island Guide's beach-choice advice helps if you're weighing up options.

How do you get to Gennadi Beach?

A car is the easiest way to get to Gennadi, especially from Rhodes Town. Buses run down the east coast, and if you're staying in Gennadi village you can walk down to the beach.

By car

Drive down the east coast road from Rhodes Town and park where it's allowed near a public beach entrance. Compare car rental prices if you want the freedom to linger or add another beach. The Rhodes Island Guide's getting-around advice covers the wider choices.

By bus

Buses serve Gennadi from Rhodes Town—see Rhodes Bus Schedules & Prices for current times, including the last bus back.

Walking from Gennadi village

From the village it's a walk down to the shore. With a pushchair or lots of beach gear, ask your accommodation for the easiest route.

Transfers and taxis

If you'd rather not drive, browse private transfer options or take a local taxi. Arriving from the airport? Compare Rhodes airport transfers, or see everything on the Rhodes Booking Marketplace.

Chapter 6 of 8

When should you visit?

I'd go in the morning to settle in before the strongest midday sun—especially with children. Later in the day is lovely for a shoreline walk in softer light. For the bigger question of when to travel, see the Rhodes Island Guide's advice on when to visit.

Keeping it flexible

Start with a beach stop and stay longer if everyone's happy. The village has cafés and tavernas, and things to do around Gennadi can turn a short beach visit into a full afternoon.

Chapter 7 of 8

What should you bring?

Pack light: comfortable footwear, a towel or mat, drinking water, sunscreen, a hat and a closable bag. The Rhodes Island Guide's practical essentials covers wider trip preparation.

Packing list

  • Sandals or water shoes for the sand and small pebbles.
  • A towel or lightweight beach mat.
  • Drinking water and a snack.
  • Sunscreen and a hat.
  • Your own shade if you'll sit on a natural stretch.
  • A light cover-up for the breeze after swimming.
